Network icon popup menu in Win7 does not work and neither does "Connect to a network"
I'm working on cleaning up a desktop that was infected by a virus or malware that caused missing dll errors and cut any type of internet connection. I was able to get the system stable and connect to the internet via LAN cable by running CCleaner and MalwareBytes in safe mode. The Windows Installer Service was corrupted, so i had to copy over missing files (msiexec.exe, msimsg.dll) and a registry key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msiserver) to get it working again. However, i cannot connect to any wireless networks as there seems to be a service or application missing that enables a popup window when you click on the network icon in the taskbar; but the right click works. Furthermore, when i go into Network and Sharing Center, the link to Connect to a Network does nothing and i tried disabling and re-enabling the adapters and uninstalling / updating the drivers. All the network related services (Store Interface, Location Awareness, List, and Connections) are all started and run automatically. Could i be missing an exe or dll?

Hi, I would like to provide the following suggestions: 1. Please run the following command in an command prompt and see if the list will appear: rundll32.exe van.dll,RunVAN 2. Actually, the officially recommended method is still to format and re-install the compromised computer from a known good build (i.e. operating system CD + all security patches while disconnected from the network). Hi Nicholas, I'm having a similar problem, but it's not virus related. Running rundll32.exe van.dll,RunVAN in the command prompt does pop up with the wireless networks list, but clicking on the wireless icon in the notification tray does not. I can right click and go to network settings that way, but it's quite inconvenient. Perhaps it's a layering thing, where the network list isn't set to be on top anymore?

Nicholas Li - MSFT Hi Nicholas, Just like ReedN, my connect prompt will come up with the command you give (thanks!) but does not respond to clicks on the network icon in the notification area. To be more specific, it seems to work but quits sometime and doesn't come back until after a boot. (haven't tried logging out and back in though). In case it makes any difference, I use multiple monitor setups and often drag my taskbar around as needed, but had noticed the issue even with the bar on the bottom. Be nice to find out what is breaking and if I can restart or fix it on the fly if needed. Thanks!
